Description

The Navy offers scholarships for students pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.

These scholarships cover all tuition and required fees, including textbooks, small equipment items, and supplies needed for study. You will also receive a monthly allowance for living expenses. While on scholarship, you will spend 45 days on active duty in the Navy each year, and once you graduate, you will serve one year of active duty for each year of scholarship, serving a minimum of three years.

Selection Criteria

  • Applicants must demonstrate a strong academic record; competitive applicants generally hold a minimum 3.2 undergraduate GPA.
  • Qualifying MCAT score of 500 with minimum subsection scores of 124 in each of the four subsections.

Who Can Apply?

  • Applicants must be accepted to or enrolled in a medical school accredited by either the Association of American Medical Colleges (MD schools) or the American Osteopathic Association (DO schools), located within the continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, or Puerto Rico.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants must meet all medical and physical standards for commissioning as a Navy officer.
  • Applicants must be under the age of 42 by date of commissioning ; up to 47 with a waiver (case by case basis).

Service Agreement
  • Serve a minimum 3-year commitment as an active duty Navy physician, or 1 year for each year of scholarship participation (whichever is greater).
  • 3-year HPSP recipients have a 3-year service obligation.
  • 4-year HPSP recipients have a 4-year service obligation.
  • Payback of educational commitment begins after completion of graduate medical education training.
  • Time spent in a military residency or fellowship program does not count toward service obligation.
