Description

The Native American Congressional Internship Program identifies future leaders in Indian Country and places them in Congressional and Federal agency offices in Washington, D.C. to learn firsthand how the Federal Government works with and impacts Tribes and Tribal communities. The Internship provides professional development for up to 12 deserving and qualified students annually, connecting them to a network of leaders and policymakers in Indian affairs.

What It Is

  • A community of 12 Native American and Alaska Native college, graduate, and law students who live and work in Washington, D.C., during the summer;
  • Access to a network of Native professionals and alumni who work on behalf of Tribal Nations; and
  • An Internship award stipend to cover the cost of transportation to and from Washington, D.C., housing and per diem during the program period, and educational and miscellaneous expenses.
Eligibility

Udall Native American Congressional Internship Eligibility
1) U.S. Citizens, Nationals, and Lawful Permanent Residents;
2) Who are enrolled members of one or more Federally Recognized Indian Tribes that are included in the annual list of Indian Tribes published by the Secretary of the Interior pursuant to 25 U.S.C. § 5131;
3) Who are current students or recent graduates of accredited higher education institutions;
and
4) Who meet other appropriate eligibility requirements set by the Udall Foundation

Procedure

Your complete Udall Internship application includes

  • Signed application form
  • Resume
  • Completed short answers 
  • Essay, signed and dated
  • Three recommendation letters 
  • Current official transcript, any other transcripts from colleges/universities attended for credit within the past 6 years 
  • Copy of Federally Recognized Tribal documents, and if applicable, proof of U.S. permanent residency
