Description
The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides a $30,000 stipend for a graduating college senior to pursue one year of public service anywhere in the world. The award allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service activity for one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career.
To apply, please develop a proposal for public service in this country or abroad. The proposal may encompass any activity that furthers the public good. It can be undertaken by yourself alone or by working through established charitable, religious, educational, governmental, or other public service organizations.

Eligibility
Applications are accepted from current graduating college seniors. If you plan to graduate just prior to the deadline (i.e. Sept – Dec), you may apply in January the following year.
Both US and non-US citizens are eligible to apply, but must be graduating from a U.S. college or university.

Procedure
Students are encouraged to develop their own proposals for public service in the U.S. or abroad. The proposal may encompass any activity that furthers the public good. It can be undertaken by the student alone or working through established charitable, religious, educational, governmental, or other public service organizations. Your application should also include a one-page cover sheet, proposal, budget, transcript, resume, and three letters of recommendation.
Along with the application, please submit:
1. A brief abstract of the proposal (no more than 100 words)
2. Proposal in 1,000 words or less, including:
a. Brief statement of need for the project (no more than a few sentences)
b. Specific measurable target objectives
c. Schedule for project tasks
d. Sustainability of the project
3. Budget (your application will be viewed more favorably if a significant portion of the funds are devoted to your project; award monies are not to be used for student loan repayment).
4. Three letters of recommendation (each one-page only)
5. Transcript (official)
6. Resume

History
Samuel Huntington was President and Chief Executive Officer of the New England Electric System which later merged with National Grid. He was deeply interested in public service. Following his graduation from college and before attending law school, Mr. Huntington taught in Nigeria. The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award was established by his friends to allow other students to realize similar experiences and to provide public service.
