Description

The State Association of the Daughters of Pioneers of Washington grants  two $1500 scholarship annually to a descendant of a pioneer who established residence in Washington during or prior to the year 1870, or in Oregon during or prior to the year 1853, or in Idaho during or prior to the year 1863 or in Montana (west of the crest of the Rocky Mountains) during or prior to the year 1863.

Eligibility

To qualify for this scholarship you must be all of the following:

1. A descendant of a person establishing residence in one of these states:

a. Washington State during or prior to 1870

b. Oregon State during or prior to 1853

c. Idaho State during or prior to 1863

d. Montana State –west of the crest of the Rocky Mountains- during or prior to 1863

2. A resident of Washington State

3. A full-time student in an accredited college or university in Washington State

4. A college junior, senior or graduate student during the year of the scholarship

Preference will be given to students majoring in history, education or English.

Procedure

The following must be submitted when applying for a scholarship:
1. Proof of pioneer status and descent documentation showing that you are a descendant of a person qualifying as stated above.
2. Genealogical chart filled out so that your line of descent from the qualifying ancestor is clear and uninterrupted.
3. Two letters of recommendation from school administrators or teachers.
4. A personal letter of application which describes the following:
Education/professional goals
Volunteer and community activities
Organization memberships and offices held
Honors or awards received or special accomplishments
Your specific scholarship needs
5. High school and college transcripts – copies acceptable
History

The memorial scholarship was established in May of 1940 as a way to honor our pioneer ancestors.
