Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States, has pursued its mission of fostering and recognizing excellence in the liberal arts and sciences since 1776. The Puget Sound Association of Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1953, is open to all Phi Beta Kappa members from any chapter in the country who currently reside in the Puget Sound area. It encourages and supports excellence in education through activities and awards. 
 
 
The Ernest R. Stiefel Graduate Study Award is given to graduate or professional students who are members of Phi Beta Kappa chapters at the University of Puget Sound or University of Washington and who will attend graduate or professional school at either the University of Puget Sound or the University of Washington.
Eligibility

Eligibility & Selection Criteria:

  • Applicants must be members of Phi Beta Kappa elected at the University of Washington or the University of Puget Sound; and
  • Beginning graduate work at either the University of Washington or the University of Puget Sound in the following academic year;
  • Graduate study may be in the liberal arts, humanities, sciences, or professions;
  • Financial need as demonstrated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) document on file at the applicant’s current institution;
  • Social utility of applicant’s educational and career goals;
  • Applicant’s work experience;
  • Achieving academic success in the face of significant personal adversity, economic disadvantage or disability, if applicable.

Procedure
Each applicant must submit the following:

Signature on the application authorizes release of financial information. The institution will then have permission to confirm unmet need with the Association’s Scholarship Award Committee.

  • A personal letter outlining 
  1. Education and career goals
  2. Statement of financial need
  3. Description of the applicant’s work experience and significant personal adversity, economic disadvantage or disability, if applicable.
  • Official transcript of college work
